This was a challenging scene for me. It was really my scene partner’s scene, and she needed a man to play the other character. I volunteered because I liked the writing and I thought it would be a good thing to add to my reel. I knew I was going to do a lot of comedic scenes, so adding a drama felt like a smart move.
Once we got recording, I couldn’t believe how profound it was. Acting teachers talk about “discovery,” constantly. The idea that in real life people don’t always know what they’re going to say next, so despite you having your lines memorized you have to look like you came up with your sentences right now. This was the scene where I think I did my best “discovery” of any scene to date. Watching my professor come down the stairs and say “I have no notes” is a memory I will never forget.
